In aged times

The calling of the ferryman is epitomized in Greek mythology in Charon, the boatman who transported souls over the River Styx to the Underworld.

Theory that a couple of bulls pushed a boat having a water wheel might be found in fourth century Roman writing "Anonymus De Rebus Bellicis". Despite the fact that unfeasible, there is no motivation behind why it couldn't work and such a ship, changed by utilizing steeds, was utilized within Lake Champlain in nineteenth century America. See "When Horses Walked on Water: Horse-Powered Ferries in Nineteenth-Century America" (Smithsonian Institution Press; Kevin Crisman, co-composed with Arthur Cohn, Executive Director of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum). See Experiment (steed fueled watercraft).
